In our Elementary School, we strive for a safe and comfortable learning environment for all children. We are guided by the PYP Learner Profile, our School Code of Conduct and by the 4 Be’s that all children know and follow. Recently, I had letters from children in several classes asking that I talk with them regarding their concerns about bullying and how to handle it in the school. We also discussed this at our Team Leader Meeting and decided that it was appropriate that we make a statement about bullying so that all students know where the school stands, how to identify what bullying is and what to do if someone is bullied. So, Ms. Cook (Gr2) and I have put together a statement on Anti-bullying for our young learners. Teachers will be talking with classes so that all students know what bullying is and how to handle it when they are a victim of or observe it happening to others. As a school, we are lucky to have students who want to be treated with respect and care.
ISS Elementary School Anti Bullying Statement
The belief in our Elementary School is that bullying behavior is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.
In line with our 4 Be’s Code Of Conduct
• The School Community (students, staff and parents) will work in co-operation towards building and maintaining an anti-bullying ethos in the school.
• The school will provide a happy, supportive and safe environment in which everyone can achieve their full potential.
• Students and adults will feel able to report bullying behavior, confident that they will be listened to and action taken to remedy the situation.
• Students will be valued and respected in the school community.
• Students will be encouraged to become creative, motivated and lifelong learners prepared for an ever-changing, global community.
Definition of bullying
• It is deliberately hurtful or threatening behavior.
• It is premeditated and usually forms a pattern of behavior rather than an isolated incident.
• It involves dominance of one pupil by another, or group of others.
The main types of bullying are
• Physical – pushing, hitting, kicking, pinching, any form of violence or threats.
• Verbal – name calling, sarcasm, spreading rumors, persistent teasing.
• Emotional – tormenting, threatening, ridicule, humiliation, exclusion from groups or activities.
